Currently unemployed? Volunteer your way into a job

Currently unemployed_ Volunteer your way into a job

Fired? Laid off? Quit in a huff? In life, you may find yourself in a situation where you are no longer employed and with no prospective job in the pipeline. Whether you recently quit your job, or are a fresh graduate desperately seeking entry into the working world, we can all agree it is necessary to find a productive way to fill our time while hunting for jobs.

Volunteering for a cause you are truly passionate about is not only fulfilling but also an excellent way to leave your mark on society. If you’re dedicated enough, you may even end up clinching a full-time role at the non-profit organization of your dreams.

1. Make yourself indispensable

Lend a helping hand wherever you can. Non-profit organizations are often short-staffed and by offering colleagues and superiors your assistance with projects, you will come to be recognized as a valuable member of the team. Embrace opportunities that come your way, and get yourself noticed by taking up leadership positions. Propose new projects that will boost the profile of the organization, and be a part of tasks that involves working closely with the upper management of the organization.

2. Honesty is the best policy

Don’t shy away from telling your managers or superior about your interest in a full-time position. When the time comes, your superior may use this knowledge to either promote you to a full-time position or recommend you to another organization seeking someone with your skills and expertise for a full-time role. Be vocal about your long-term commitment to the organization and express your interest in learning the ropes so you are adequately prepared for a full-time role.

3. Network

Maximise your volunteering stint by getting to know as many people as possible. By expanding your network, you are instantly connected with like-minded people who may be experts in your field of work or in a field you are hoping to enter. Many volunteer organizations often host fundraising events or collaborations with other non-profit groups for events, so don’t be shy about making friends. By talking to people from diverse backgrounds, not only will you discover more about your current job profile, but you will also unearth potential opportunities. Who knows – you might meet your next boss at one of these gatherings.

4. Be professional

Treat your volunteering position like your full-time job. Do all the things you would do for your regular job-arrive on time, finish tasks and submit deliverables within deadlines. Establish yourself as helpful, dependable and willing to work despite not being paid. Your tenacity might convince your superiors to bump you up to a paid position.
