Job Description
Legal Intern
Partners in Justice International (PJI) is an international human rights organization with a mission to strengthen justice processes for victims and survivors of grave crimes such as crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide. We do this primarily by providing practical support to serious crime prosecutors, victim representatives, and investigators working in post-conflict and post-dictatorship jurisdictions. PJI facilitates the circulation and exchange of knowledge and experience locally and among practitioners and experts around the globe. PJI also intervenes strategically in litigation and international procedures to advance the rights of victims and survivors of grave crimes. In short, we partner with local justice actors to challenge impunity for grave crimes, advance justice for victims where they live, and build resilience to sustain peace and democracy long term.
Qualifications:PJI generally invites second and third-year law student interns to work with us during our summer term (June, July, and August or thereabouts). Exceptional first-year law students may be considered.Ideal candidates are students with some familiarity with human rights law, international criminal and humanitarian law, and evidence law.
Please note that PJI maintains a remote office, so legal interns are expected to work from home and be available for meetings between 11:00 and 17:00 UK time.
Legal Intern Specific Responsibilities:The work that you do will depend greatly on our project needs at the time of your internship, but you can expect that much of the work will involve legal research and writing. Please be aware that much of our work is related to domestic litigation in various jurisdictions. So your research assignments may relate more often to evidence, procedure, and domestic law than to matters of international crimes or human rights law.
Sponsorship:PJI will be pleased to sponsor selected interns for funding opportunities, but the organization does not have independent funding to pay legal interns.
Applications:Applications for internships are reviewed on a rolling basis, so potential candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
