Job Description

Job Title: Commis ChefReports To: Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, or Head ChefJob Purpose:

The Commis Chef is responsible for assisting senior chefs in preparing and cooking dishes according to the kitchen's standards. This role involves learning and developing culinary skills, maintaining kitchen hygiene, and supporting the kitchen team to ensure smooth operations.
  • Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation:
  • Assist in the preparation of ingredients for cooking, including washing, peeling, cutting, and measuring.
Prepare simple dishes under supervision, such as salads, appetizers, and garnishes.
  • Ensure all food items are prepared according to the recipes and quality standards.
Cooking:
  • Assist with cooking duties, such as grilling, roasting, frying, boiling, and baking.
Monitor food cooking processes to ensure they meet the required standards.
Kitchen Operations: Keep workstations clean and organized, following health and safety regulations.
  • Help with stocking and inventory management, ensuring ingredients are properly stored and rotated.
Assist with receiving deliveries, checking the quality and quantity of items received.
Learning and Development: Observe and learn from senior chefs, gaining knowledge of various cooking techniques, recipes, and kitchen operations.
  • Participate in training sessions and culinary courses as required.
Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with other kitchen staff to ensure efficient and harmonious kitchen operations.
Assist in other sections of the kitchen as needed, gaining experience in all areas.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance:
Assist in the cleaning of kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas.
  • Follow proper waste disposal procedures and contribute to maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
  • Skills and Qualifications:
Education: Culinary school training or a basic culinary qualification is often preferred but not always required.
Experience: Previous kitchen or food service experience is beneficial but not mandatory for entry-level roles.Skills: Basic knife skills, knowledge of food safety and hygiene, ability to follow recipes, and eagerness to learn.
  • Personal Attributes: Strong work ethic, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and a positive attitude.
