The Indonesian NGO YEL and its Swiss partner PanEco are seeking a talented and experienced Director to develop and lead our latest project, the Orangutan Haven, into its next chapter. This role will be perfect for someone who's looking for a dynamic, impactful and international workingenvironment, and who is passionate about project management, nature, education, and making a positive impact on the environment. You must have strongleadership skills, and be someone who enjoys developing organisational structures and processes as well as growing and managing a team.As a director you will provide direction and active leadership across all areas of the organisation, including visitor experiences, fundraising and partnership management, financial management, marketing and promotions, education, animal welfare and facilities maintenance.

The Orangutan Haven is a dynamic, international project in development just outside of Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This unique initiative, a collaboration between the Swiss NGO PanEco Foundation and the Indonesian NGO Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL), combines conservation, education, and recreation into one vibrant ecopark.

Originally conceived as a long-term sanctuary for rescued orangutans unable to return to the wild, the Orangutan Haven will soon offer visitors a chance to learn about these incredible primates and their rainforest habitat. Immersed in nature, visitors can embark on an outdoor adventure, enjoying the peace and beauty of the surrounding landscape and wildlife. The Orangutan Haven is poised to become a major asset for Medan, serving as a center of excellence for conservation, education, and sustainable development. With a focus on public engagement, the project aims to raise awareness about orangutans and their plight, while encouraging responsible environmental practices.

We are not a mature company with a large structure and team,instead, we are more like a startup. This individual will play a pivotal role in developing and managing the project, ensuring its continued success and positive impact on the environment and local community.

Job Description:

As the Director of the Orangutan Haven, you will play a pivotal role in the planning, development, and execution of this project, ensuring its continued success and positive impact on the environment and local community. You will be responsible for setting up functioning organizational structures and processes, leading and motivating a team of dedicated individuals, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and experts in the field. You will report directly to the board of YEL.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Defining a 5-year Business Plan, outlining strategic goals, budget and objectives to guide the organisations's growth
• Develop and provide leadership in the delivery of a 5-year Development Strategy Plan.
• Oversee the implementation of the Development Strategy Plan.
• Set up and manage organizational structures, processes, and policies.
• Build, develop, and lead the Orangutan Haven team.
• Maintain effective alliances and operational collaboration with public and private partners.
• Communicate effectively with all stakeholders.

Qualifications:

• Graduate degree or equivalent experience in business/ngo management, nature conservation, international cooperation, environmental education, or related fields.
• Minimum of 5 years experience in a leading position in a zoo, international organization, sustainable business, school, community, or similar setting.
• Proven track record of managing large, complex projects.
• Experience in team management and diverse professional profiles.
• Experience in program and project management, strategy development, and team development.
• A record of success partnering with and influencing key stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Fluency in English and basic knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia preferred.
• Intercultural sensibility and willingness to travel internationally.
